Venezia Transatlantic: Barcelona Day 2
I woke up hot this morning. The AC is weird. I can’t get it off of 22. Turning the fan on high is what did it for me. It’s gotta be in the upper 60’s in here now which is great for me. I love the comforter on the bed. It’s soft and comfortable. It reminds me of courtyard which has some of my favorite hotel bedding.
That is a good view to wake up to.
The bathroom is equipped with all kinds of goodies in case you forgot something.
I have to check out of the hotel today so I’m checking out early and leaving my bags with the front desk.
I was looking for breakfast and this caught my eye and they seemed busy so I stopped.
I grabbed a couple of pastries and a coffee.
I guess the place is just called 365.
I wanted more coffee so I found this place across from Sagrada Familia.
I wish I were still hungry because these just came out of the oven.
I got my coffee. I’m not sure if I can take it on the bus or not.
This is the place I was just in.
I hate this lid. The hole is too far back.
I’m back at Sagrada Familia to catch the first hop on hop off bus of the day.
You can’t take coffee on the bus.
I’m going to have to repeat the first part of the blue line to get to the red line.
That’s fine because I missed the first couple sites being on the left side of the bus. Today I’ll get on the right side. Also we couldn’t go down to the soccer stadium yesterday because they had a game. I’m hoping we can go down there today.
This is Sant Pau Recinte Modernista. It was a built 1905-1930 and served as a hospital. Now it’s a museum. A ticket costs 16 euros and you need to be prepared to spend at least an hour here.
The bus has free Wi-Fi. I was struggling with it yesterday but got it to work today.
La Rotunda was the Metropolitan Hotel until 1970. It was a fancy place for meetings, balls, and galas for the first half of the 20th century. It’s currently being renovated.
This is the Saint Gervasi and Protase church.
I wonder if the coffee is good there.
From here we can see Collserola Tower. It was built for the 1992 Olympics. It has the highest public observation deck in the city which is definitely a place I would like to visit if I’m ever here again and have more time.
This is the Monastery of Pedralbes. This monastery was founded in 1326. It’s now a museum.
The Wi-Fi did stop working again.
This is Spotify Camp Nou which is home of FC Barcelona. We couldn’t come here yesterday because of the soccer game.
This is one of three buildings that house La Caixa bank headquarters.
This bus has been pretty quiet. Only 2-5 people have been on it all morning. I highly recommend the 9am bus. It’s been nice.
Now it looks like we’re going to be picking up a lot.
This shopping center has a very large sidewalk.
This is a spot where I can transfer to the red route. I need to get off, walk a block, and turn right.
Here we are.
The bus is packed!
The bus didn’t have USB ports. This one does.
This is Placa dels Paisos Catalans which is a public square built near the central railway station that includes a roof.
This is the Parc de l’Espanya Industrial which opened in 1985. It includes this sculpture of a dragon which doubles as a slide for kids.
The trees are blocking the Dona i Ocell. This is a 72 foot statue made of tiles that is supposed to represent women and birds.
This is Las Arenas. It was a bullfighting arena that closed down in 1977. In 2011 it re-opened as a shopping center.
There is an observation deck on the roof I would love to stop at if I had the time. Access to the observation deck is free. If you want to use the glass elevator it costs 1 euro. Escalators are free of charge.
This is Plaza de Espana. As you can imagine it is best viewed from the roof of Las Arenas directly behind it.
These venetian towers serve as the entrance to the exhibition district and the start of Grand Avenue which leads to Palau Nacional.
Palau Nacional was the main site of the 1929 World’s Fair and has been home to the National Art Museum of Catalonia since 1934.
Caixa Forum is a cultural center that hosts exhibitions, workshops, and events.
This is another view of Palau Nacional.
The white tower is Montjuic Communications Tower. It was built to transmit television coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics. It also functions as a giant sundial, using Europa Square to indicate the hour.
This is Olympic Stadium which was originally built in 1927 for the 1929 World’s Fair. It was renovated in 1989 to be the main stadium for the 1992 Summer Olympics.
This is the Montjuic cable car which goes up to Montjuic Castle atop Montjuic Mountain. It costs 13.50 euros for a round trip ticket.
We are now down near the port. This next stop is the one you would get on and off at if you were doing this on a cruise ship excursion.
This is the old Customs House.
We are going around the Christopher Columbus monument.
This is a lobster sculpture.
This is a ceramic tile sculpture that was created for the 1992 Summer Olympics. It’s called El Cap de Barcelona.
These are the Olympic Towers. One is an office building and the other is a 5-star hotel. They were built for the Olympic Village at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
This is the beach.
Glories Tower is a 38 story building in the technology district. It lights up at night and was visible from the rooftop bar last night.
Glories Tower lights up at night and was visible from the rooftop bar last night.
We have arrived at Placa de Catalunya. This is the central square where you can get on any bus line. I’m going to get off here and walk across the square to catch the blue line back to Sagrada Familia.
This is the monument to Francesc Macia who was the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia. The unfinished inverted staircase represents the history of Catalonia being constructed day-by-day.
I made it to the blue line bus stop but there is a long line.
Two buses just pulled up.
Two more buses pulled up and I turned the corner.
I’m the last one they’re letting on this one. I’m just going to stay downstairs here. I’m only using it as transportation back basically. I’m sure the top deck is a madhouse.
This looks to be a smaller version of the Julia sculpture from Madrid.
We made it back to Sagrada Familia.
This is an angle I haven’t gotten yet.
This place is right by my hotel and had some good reviews so I’m going to grab a bite before picking up my luggage.
This is an Estrella Damm.
Chorizo and queso.
Ham croquettes.
I would definitely choose the Chill place I ate at last night over this one. Something about the frying with the croquette just doesn’t taste right. I stopped after 1.
I’m off to pick up my luggage and head to the port.
