Super Bowl Magic: San Juan

on
April 17, 2023

Good morning from San Juan! Straight ahead you can see Castillo San Christobal which I covered last time in The Forts of San Juan. I don’t have big plans for today. It’s an early port day. I am hoping the umbrellas will be on the umbrella street. I want to visit the bar where the pina colada was invented. Then I’d like to get some lunch before returning to the ship.

Here is a look at today’s Fun Times.

I’m going to stop by the Red Frog Rum bar for a shot before heading off of the ship.

Fireball.

They are replacing the wood on all of the steps by Red Frog Rum bar.

I am heading off of the ship.

We are in port with Celebrity Silhouette today.

It was much more difficult to get this shot without people when I was here on Mardi Gras.

I got across the street and it started raining.

I think I see a shelter up ahead.

Here is a look at the menu. I went with a local craft beer.

Looks like it’s cleared up.

That’s much better.

Maybe I can get a souvenir.

I was thinking the umbrella street would be a good place to be when it rained. Maybe not. Let’s just imagine a bunch of umbrellas up there.

This is where the pina colada was invented. I’m going to give theirs a try.

They have quite a line. I waited in the line on the right side. They were telling people 1pm for a table which is in two hours. When I got to the front I asked for a bar spot. They sent me to another line on the left.

This is a big operation. I don’t know about all the premade stuff.

It’s not bad. But my favorite pina colada is still the one at John Watling’s Distillery in Nassau.

I was going to get another pina colada and food but the bartender said you can’t order food at the bar today because he’s alone. I can’t wait until 1pm. He did suggest a restaurant called Genesis that is close to the port.

I stopped by the genesis and ordered a local beer.

I couldn’t decide on food there. The other place had a sampler thing I was going to get. I didn’t see anything like that there.

My what a big nose you have!

I think this is a crew member bringing Domino’s onboard. He has Subway in his other hand.

I got a burrito and Corona for lunch.

This woman at the table behind me has to scream everything. Like she’s talking to someone on the other side of the ship. It’s not even loud over here or anything.

Blue cards…

Alchemy opens at 2pm today on account of the early port day. I was able to get a spot despite an entire cornhole team taking up alchemy spots.

Monica made this one.

I would’ve done pretty well had I been playing this sports trivia. There were only two I didn’t know. Both were tennis/soccer questions. Of course two teams got all 20 so it would’ve been a waste of time.

Another from Monica.

Winter in Hawaii from Monica.

Another from Monica. This is Bacardi/Blue Curacao, orange juice and grenadine. I’m pretty sure this is what they called a rainbow shot at the resort in Mexico. After I took a picture she had to mix it up but if it’s a shot maybe you don’t have to.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before. Karaoke in Ocean Plaza. It’s horrible. And everyone is going to be walking through it over the next three hours. Apparently it’s here because the Platinum-Diamond party is in the Limelight. All of the Platinum-Diamond parties I’ve been to have been in the main lounge.

Feel my pain.

Speaking of the Platinum-Diamond party.

It’s packed!

Bar seats are taken.

I found a spot.

CD Rico.

Captain and officers.

THE video.

The entertainment.

They cleared the lounge after 35 minutes.

This guy walking around in a top hat doesn’t know his clip on bow tie is hanging off.

A photographer told monopoly man about the problem.

After that function I had some time to kill before dinner. Karaoke was still going on in Ocean Plaza. I decided to head to the casino. I took my free play in chips but couldn’t find a table I wanted so I’m holding that for another time and I just played slots instead.

Dixieland delight.

I got in the elevator to stop by my room on the way to Cucina. Four women jump in. Say their drunk. I’m driving. Etc. We all get out on Lido deck and it turns out their rooms are just a few doors down from mine. So I’m walking behind them and I guess they don’t know it. They start talking about me.

“He didn’t have a good sense of humor.”

“He didn’t think we were funny.”

“He didn’t know how good he had it.”

I say “No he didn’t.”

They start laughing “we told you we were drunk!”

This is what they have in the buffet tonight.

This is what they’re having in the MDR.

I made it to my Cucina reservation on time.

We Dine!

I’m trying to order things I haven’t had tonight.

Antipasti

Fingerling potatoes.

Grilled shrimp.

I have had all the deserts so this won’t be new to me. This is the lemon dessert.

After dinner I headed to the comedy showcase in the main lounge.

Comedy host Stu.

Derrick Eason.

Lenny Schmidt.

A lot of unhappy people were standing in the back after comedy when Stu told everyone to remain seated because The Love and Marriage show was about to begin. They were all waiting for people to get up so they could get seats.

The Hot….somewhat white night on Lido deck.

I’m off to bed. Tomorrow we’re in Grand Turk.
