Seattle Food
I am going to cover only the food I ate during my two day stay in Seattle. I was not able to hit all of the places I had planned on, but I came close.
Dog in the Park
I think you have to start out with the basics: hotdogs and hamburgers. For hot dogs I hear the place to go is Dog in the Park for the Seattle dog. This location was by Westlake Center which is where the light rail and monorail stations are located. I also saw a cart by the Space Needle.
Here is a look at the menu. I went with a Seattle Dog and a bottle of water. The Seattle Dog has cream cheese and caramelized vegetables.
It’s pretty good. I was worried about putting cream cheese on a hot dog but it really isn’t overwhelming. It’s more about the hot dog and the veggies.
Dick’s
For the hamburger side of things I heard Dick’s is the place to go. This is supposed to be their In-N-Out burger, their Whataburger, their Shake Shack. The location that worked best for me was the one closest to the Space Needle.
This line makes me feel like I came to the right place. They have an interesting setup here. There are no tables. It’s just a wide open restaurant. They have do have places to stand and eat on the side and in the back which is what I’m going to do. I want to eat it fresh.
The menu is pretty basic. It’s similar in size to the In-N-Out menu.
I did not notice at the time that they charge you for onions and ketchup. I guess I just take it for granted that onions usually come on a deluxe burger.
I didn’t notice the tartar on the menu either. Where I’m from tartar sauce is usually only an option at seafood places. Of course also where I’m from cream cheese is on a bagel, not a hot dog. So who knows? I wonder what they do with the tartar. Do they dip their fries in it, put it on their burger, or both? Maybe I wasn’t fully prepared for this experience.
It’s a good thing I drink diet coke. Otherwise they would’ve hit me with a sugar drink tax.
I went with a Dick’s Deluxe. The burger is wasn’t too special. I mean it doesn’t have enough cheese to compete with the double double. But it had sweet pickles on it. Every time I have a burger with sweet pickles I wonder why more burgers don’t have sweet pickles on them. I wish I would’ve noticed the onions were an add-on. I definitely would’ve liked to have onions on this deluxe burger.
I also got fries and a large drink. This is either 16 ounce or 20 ounce. Most places where I’m from would give you a 32 or 44 ounce if you ordered a large soda.
Overall it’s not bad. But if I lived here I wouldn’t get in my car, drive over here, park, and stand in this line for it.
Ivar’s
Next I’m turning my attention to Fish & Chips and Chowder. I’ve heard Ivar’s is a place to go for both of them. I found a location on the water front that was convenient for me.
Here they have Ivar’s Fish Bar and Ivar’s Acres of Clams next to each other. I’m going for Ivar’s Fish Bar.
Here is a look at the menu. The “Cajun Style” under the cod catches my eye so that’s what I’m going with. I’m also going try their chowder with a bread bowl.
I wanted a soda and I need to re-hydrate so I added a diet coke and a water.
It was good. I didn’t really eat the fries or the bread bowl other than the top of it but the fish and chowder were good.
At Ivar’s you can also feed seagulls. I’ve read that feeding bread to birds isn’t really good for them. It’s like junk food for them. So I’m going to throw this guy a piece of fish.
Pike Place Chowder
Let’s continue the chowder theme at the place I heard you had to go for chowder, Pike Place Chowder. It’s surprising to me how early the places at Pike Place Market close. It seems too early to me. I arrived at 4:30pm and they’re already shutting down. They are still selling chowder to go so that’s what I’m going to do.
This is the menu. I went with a four chowder sampler and asked for their four best. I believe he gave me New England Clam, Smoked Salmon, Seafood Bisque, and Seared Scallop.
I don’t know if it was a fair competition since I didn’t get to try these fresh, but I think I liked the Ivar’s chowder better.
Beecher’s Handmade Cheese
Another place I had to try at Pike Place is Beecher’s Handmade Cheese.
Here is a look at the menu. They claim to have the world’s best mac & cheese so I have to try that. Their grilled cheese looks really good so I’m definitely going to try that as well.
I’m not a big tomato soup guy but I know a lot of people like to dip their grilled cheese in it so I went ahead and added it.
This mac & cheese is really good.
This has to be the best grilled cheese I’ve had.
This is their tomato soup with cheese and croutons. It’s not bad but I’m still not a big tomato soup guy.
Piroshky Piroshky
I heard the place to go for pastry is Piroshky. I caught it when they first opened one day. Later on there will be a line out the door. I did see another Piroshky in Columbia Center. It was closed when I went through there but that was after 5pm.
They said they put their best sellers on top. I’m looking for a breakfast pastry to start off with but none of their best sellers are breakfast.
I asked for their best selling breakfast pastry and got a bacon, hash brown, egg, and cheese.
From the best seller list I got a beef and cheese.
This is a jalapeno cheese sausage piroshky I had for breakfast another day.
Everything I had a Piroshky was good. Here is a look at their menu.
That wraps up everything I ate in Seattle. I will add one more place. Though I didn’t eat there, the Starbuck’s Reserve Roastery had some amazing looking food including pizzas and sandwiches cooked in these cast iron ovens.
There is no shortage of food to try in Seattle. I have more places on my list for next time. Hopefully there will be a part 2 in the future.
