New York Beer
One thing I like to do while traveling is try the local beer wherever I go. During my recent trip to New York City, I made every attempt to only drink local beers. I was successful everywhere I went except for the 230 5th Rooftop Bar.
Out of all of the beers I had, the one I would say was most available and would appeal to the widest range of beer drinkers is the Brooklyn Lager from Brooklyn Brewery.
Historically I haven’t been a huge IPA fan. But after my New York trip I may be more willing to give IPA’s a shot in the future. I found two IPA’s I really liked in New York. The first one is this Sun Up Hazy IPA from the Talea Beer Co. in Booklyn.
I found that one at Tavern on the Green in Central Park. Here is a look at the full beer list from Tavern on the Green.
Another IPA I really like is the Tiny Juicy IPA I had from Five Burroughs Brewing Co. in Brooklyn.
I did have another IPA from Five Burroughs Brewing that I didn’t like as much. That was the Gridlock Hazy IPA.
I had this one on the Staten Island side of the Staten Island Ferry. It was the only local beer they carried in the store so I ended up having a couple of them even though it wasn’t my favorite. If I could go back and do that ferry ride again I would’ve bought a couple different beers on the Manhattan side where they seemed to have a better selection.
These beers from the Staten Island side were the cheapest I had in New York at $6 each. The most expensive would’ve been $15 beers at the Mets game.
On the Manhattan side of the Staten Island ferry I found the Pulp Art Hazy IPA from Brooklyn Brewery. I wasn’t a fan of this one either.
I was surprised that the store in Staten Island didn’t carry any Staten Island beer. It is possible they don’t can their beer. The Staten Island beers I found were on tap.
This is a Metropolitan Lager I found from Flagship Brewing in Staten Island. I had this one at the Castell Lounge on the rooftop of the AC Hotel in Times Square.
The other Staten Island beer I found was also from Flagship Brewing. This is Samuel Fraunce’s American Ale which they brew exclusively for Fraunce’s Tavern.
I was disappointed that I didn’t find any local dark beers. I thought I had one when I was at Fraunce’s Tavern and they said this was from their brewery. When I dug deeper I found out their brewery is in Ireland.
A baseball game is a good but expensive place to sample many New York Beers. Citi Field is where I found this Mermaid Pilsner from Coney Island Brewery.
This stand behind home plate on the upper level of Citi Field is the best place I found for local beer selection.
Inside the Jim Beam Club just behind that stand I found this Biscuit Beer paired with biscuit sandwiches at Jacob’s Pickles.
Walk Thru Bru on the first level of Citi Field also had a nice selection but it wasn’t all local like the Empire Craft stand.
This Bushwick Pilsner from Braven Brewing in Brooklyn was one of the beers I found at Walk Thru Bru.
At a restaurant bar called J.G. Melon, I found a Summer Ale on tap from Bronx Brewery.
I tried as many local beers as possible on my trip to New York. The ones that stood out to me were the Brooklyn Lager from Brooklyn Brewery, Metropolitan Lager from Flagship Brewing in Staten Island, Sun Up Hazy IPA from Talea Beer Co. in Booklyn, and Tiny Juicy IPA from Five Burroughs Brewing in Brooklyn. Those are my four favorite New York beers. Three of the four are from Brooklyn.
