John Watling’s Distillery in Nassau

on
March 15, 2021

John Watling’s Distillery was named after a 17th century English Buccaneer, John Watling. The distillery is located in a historic house, The Buena Vista Estate, which was used in the James Bond Casino Royale movie. Tours and tastings at the distillery are activities you can participate in free of charge during your stop in Nassau.

Getting to John Watling’s Distillery

This is the Nassau cruise port after just getting off of the ship.

John Watlings is a 3/4 mile walk or a short cab ride from the port area. To go on foot all you need to do is take a right after exiting the cruise port and follow the sidewalk all the way as if you were going to the beach. Take a left on West Street. John Watlings will be just a few blocks down on the right.

The Buena Vista Estate was built in 1789 and at first housed the General Assembly and the Governor’s Council. It later became the home of the Chief Justice. The Estate was used as the Nambutu Embassy in the 2006 James Bond film “Casino Royale.”

Due to a year long renovation that was completed in 2013, the Estate looks very different than the one from the James Bond movie. But this is clearly the gate to the “Nambutu Embassy.”

And the is the spot where Daniel Craig jumped the fence.

This tour is free. A tour van pulled up just as I arrived so I ended up joining their tour.

Upon entry we were given the history of the estate and samples of the best pina colada I’ve ever had.

We just came out the back and down the steps on the far right. This is the back of the house.

You’ll find a lot of limestone in Nassau. From the Forts to the Queen’s Staircase to this hand-cut well.

Part of the 2012-2013 renovation was the addition of a 10,000 square foot barrel ageing and production facility behind the house.

We are about to go back inside the main building to the gift shop area.

In the gift shop area they some items from the James Bond filming on display.

The tour ends with a rum tasting in the Red Turtle Tavern.

We are back out front now. We entered in the door on the left and exited the double doors on the right.

A visit to John Watling’s Distillery is a nice free activity you can participate in during your time in Nassau. I will definitely be back one of these days to spend some time sipping pina colada in the Red Turtle Tavern.
