Jewel: Seward Day 1
I just arrived on the Park Connection bus to Seward. I do prefer the Embarkation Scenic Cruise Train, but if you are looking to get to Seward quicker, earlier, and/or cheaper, Park Connection Motorcoach is a good option.
I arrived in the opposite side of town from my hotel. I did receive instructions from the hotel to call a day ahead of time and schedule pickup with them. I was traveling yesterday and forgot. I probably could’ve called them this morning but I decided just to try to catch the free shuttle and/or walk.
The free shuttle passed me going the other way so after consulting the shuttle map, I found the nearest stop and headed there. This is stop #7 Harborview Inn.
I may have just missed the shuttle. I just saw one that said Seward city tours. It stopped at the stop sign across the street and continued on. I thought “that sounds familiar.” I look and the shuttle is run by Seward City Tours. The shuttle I saw going the other way just said “free shuttle” on it.
That’s the one I saw. I guess I’m just walking to the hotel.
My hotel is in sight. I took a lot of pictures of the buildings and murals along the way. To see those, be sure to check out Downtown Seward Tour.
I was able to check into my room immediately. That was great because I’m here four hours before check-in. For my full review of the hotel, please visit Hotel Edgewater in Seward.
Across the street is the Hotel Seward. It’s a historic hotel and I might be interested in checking out their bar. I looked into staying there but it had mixed reviews and I was going to have to pay an extra $100 for a room with a private bathroom.
I’m looking for a lunch spot so this cafe in a the old Railroad Depot on the water caught my eye. It seems to be closed on Sunday though.
Primrose provisions seems to be open in the same building. It looks like a wine bar.
I asked the hotel front desk guy about a close lunch place and he mentioned Sea Salt. It’s right across the street from my next stop which is the Alaska Sea Life Center.
You have an option to eat inside or outside. I picked outside.
That’s the Alaska Sea Life Center across the street.
Blueberry salmon with carrot mash and broccoli.
The gulls are cleaning the tables.
I think this one is waiting for me to leave.
After lunch I headed across the street to the Alaska Sealife Center.
I spent an hour and a half there. For full coverage of my visit please check out Alaska Sealife Center in Seward. I’m going to skip ahead to after that.
My original Airbnb was in this building on 4th Avenue which is the Main Street here all of the shops, bars restaurants. My hotel is one block over.
My next stop is the museum. For full coverage of that please check out Seward Museum.
I found the Mets game at Tony’s bar which is right next to Sea Salt but it’s cash only so had to run by the hotel which is only a block away. While I was there I arranged transportation with the hotel to my excursion in the morning. They seem to be great about that.
Matanuska Porter – Denali
The Fog – Seward
Oosik Amber – Midnight Sun in Anchorage
Snowshoe White – midnight Sun Anchorage
Serious cinnamon taste in that one. Must be the spiced.

I’m finishing up with a couple beers from Matanuska Brewing.
It always takes some getting used to when you’re in a bar and step outside 8pm and it looks like this.
It’s 8pm here but it looks like 4pm and it’s 11pm back home. That’s messed up.
I’m eating at the cookery tonight. It’s literally across the street from my hotel. Normally they require reservations but I was able to get a bar spot.
This is compliments of the chef. It is cucumber with salmon and walnuts and something else I missed.
Soup du jour
That soup was really spicy and good. My mouth is still feeling it.
Apparently the owner/chef brought this out. They acted like it was a big deal. This is the halibut.
That’s really good. It’s probably the best halibut I’ve had in three trips to Alaska. There’s just no doubt this was just caught and cooked perfect. The sauce is great as well.
White fang – Seward
It looks like major marine did offer transportation from my hotel. I’m thinking I was probably still at the Airbnb when I booked with them. At least I have transportation with the hotel.
This view is just a short walk from the hotel. That’s my hotel behind me.
Imagine being that guy. He’s living the dream.
I have an early excursion tomorrow so I need to head back to the room.
Mount Marathon has been cloud covered all day but it’s clear now.
One of these balconies is probably a great view. There’s no telling what they paid though. I paid 290 for my room. I know it would’ve been 307 for just a window.
I booked a room with no windows. I don’t know what that is but it’s letting a lot of light in. Good night.
