Jewel: Juneau
It looks like we arrived here early. I was looking for a salmon bake to book today since my one for tomorrow was changed to a time I cannot do. But it looks like it’s too late to book excursions for today.
They refunded the full $80 for the salmon bake even though I only paid $30 after the discount. It doesn’t look like they’ve taken any action on my Wi-Fi complaint. I guess that makes up for it.
Since 10:30am is open for me tomorrow I may see if I can switch my streetcar tour from 8:30 to 10:30. I hate early excursions. That’s the one thing I didn’t like about tomorrow. But it was necessary to get the salmon bake in.
On the movie channels this morning they have a Nolan Ryan documentary, Disney’s Wish, and an action movie I don’t know.
Two nights ago I woke up a little warm. I looked at the thermostat for the first time. It was right in the middle. I cranked it as cold as it would go and left it there. It’s probably 65 in here. On Carnival ships I’m used to it already being as low as it can be. You aren’t going to get it this cool with them unless you’re on a newer ship.
The bartenders this time are liberal with the biodegradable straws. Last year I had to get one from the end of the bar which was fine with me. They’re frequently giving me two when I’m getting two of the same drink for myself. I need to remember to tell them I just need one.
Those biodegradable straws are the best option. Carnival uses candy straws and Princess uses paper. These are just like plastic except they are brown.
It doesn’t really matter to me but I know there are Carnival people who hate that they don’t get table cloths anymore. Here they have table cloths every meal. It does give you a more fancy vibe.
There is another dining room here called Azura. I think it’s only dinner. I ate there twice last time. It’s small, dark, and the tables are close together. If you’re looking for a dark, candle lit type of dinner that may work for you.
Loaded Potatoes
Huervos Rancheros
We’re a little out of downtown but there’s a free shuttle that takes you to town.
I think I’m going to go put my jacket on. It’s windy out here. Then I’ll go up to the great outdoors and see if I can stream the Mets game with drinks and a view of float planes. My excursion isn’t until 1 and we’re here till 7:30 so no reason for me to run downtown at 9am with nothing to do.
I’m trying the drink of the day. It’s interesting. It starts out with a pineapple flavor then as it sinks in more of a coffee/chocolate. It’s not bad but I probably won’t be a repeat customer.
White Russians but he used an ice cream mix in them.
After my float plane watching I headed down to O’Sheehan’s for beers.
I’m going to get a little food in me before the excursion.
Loaded Nachos
My favorite snack here is pretzel bites.
I am heading off of the ship.
For full coverage of the tour please visit Historic Mine and Pan for Gold. I’m going to skip ahead to after the tour.
We had an option to be dropped off downtown or at the ship. I went with downtown.
I’m going to go with an option my tour guide recommended.
Someone got a s’mores donut.
They said if you order a donut you don’t get the ones out of the case. They give you fresh donuts out of the back. These are display only at this point.
I went with a worker recommendation. Salmon donut and mix of the chicken and cheese/potato dumplings.
The donut came out hot right away but it was a 15 minute wait on the dumplings. The total was $27.
This is basically a salmon spread on a hot donut. It’s actually pretty good.
The dumplings are good as well.
The Jellyfish is across the street from The Red Dog Saloon so I thought I’d stop by for a beer.
There was one open seat at the bar.
This is my favorite item here.
Red Dog Red
I’ve been here before but I’ve never been upstairs.
I ate there the last two years. They have good crabs.
I did the Goldbelt Tram last year but I’m going to do it again since I can get a free ticket with NCL. If I come back on another cruise line it will cost $50.
I think I was up here later in the day last year. I know this coffee shop was closed.
I grabbed a local beer at the bar and took a seat with a view.
What are you looking at?
Last year I don’t think anyone was in this restaurant.
There wasn’t anyone outside last year either.
I didn’t explore this side last year so I’m going to do it now.
There are a lot of trails you can take up here.
I’m going to head back to the ship.
This is where the shuttle bus picks you up.
I said “the ship is right there, just walk it.” I should’ve taken the bus. It’s not as close as it looks because you have to walk around the entire state of Alaska to get to that ship.
The boardwalk dead ends and you have to walk up to the highway.
Then it’s not straight once you get there. You have to walk around all of this. Just take the shuttle.
I finally made it back to my room.
Celebrity is heading out.
I grabbed a dirty martini. It’s not very dirty though.
I’m stuck with the 8:30am streetcar excursion. Sometime between last night and the shore excursions opening at 6pm today the 10:30am sold out. It’s very weird to me that shore excursions didn’t open until 6pm on a port day. They would’ve been open in the morning on Carnival and Princess.
After I waited in line the guy made me run back to my room to get my ticket before telling me 10:30 was sold out. He was pretty clueless. I’ll keep an eye on the app and see if it pops up available. But if it doesn’t I’m going to have a three hour gap between tours.
We are sailing away from Juneau.
I saw the show tonight is at 7:15 and 9:15. It’s an aerial show. I didn’t want to do 7:15 and miss sail away. So I’m trying to thread this needle. I went to dinner at 8:15 and I’m trying to make the 9:15 show.
Caesar salad
Bruschetta
Chicken Cordon Bleu
Cream Cheese Filled Carrot Cake
That mountain seems happy to see me.
I’m taking the exterior walkway to the show so I can catch the sunset.
It looks like the same show they had last year but it’s a different couple.
I’m feeling like Lincoln up here.
They did basically the same show as the couple last year. I think the the two last year were slightly better. But it’s a good show
I’m going to bed earlier with that early excursion tomorrow. Good night!
A lot of people were playing shuffleboard out here last night. Both of these courts were in use.
