Jewel: Icy Strait Point
Good morning! Today we’re in Icy Strait Point where I will hopefully see some eagles, whales, and bears. I’m going to show you the free whale tour you can do without leaving the ship here. Then I’m going on a real bear tour.
When I woke up this morning I found more relatively new movies from the Spring on the TV movie channels. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Migration were both on.
I didn’t even see that towel down there on the Gary Coleman towel rack.
I headed down to the dining room for breakfast. It was a short wait. They had me sit down for about 30 seconds.
The two tops were all full but they gave me a four. They make an effort to give everyone a window table.
We are in port with Norwegian Bliss. Bliss is doing the sat-sat round trip from Seattle and Encore is doing the sun-sun. I do want to do one of those with the Sitka stop. The dates didn’t work out for me this year.
These are the whale watching boats. I did the tour two years ago. You can read about it at Icy Strait Point: Whale Watching. They don’t go far from the ship so we’re going to look for a free show after breakfast.
I grabbed a couple screwdrivers. I’m going to do some free whale watching.
We just have to keep an eye on those boats because they’re going to show us where the whales are.
Eric the eagle isn’t here. I assume he’s by a stream this time of year with the salmon running.
There we go. I’ve seen 10 whales in about five minutes.
Comedy starts tonight. I’ve seen this guy on Carnival in the past year. He’s pretty good.
That was last night’s show. Rock you tonight….last night.
I am off of the ship. I’m going to go scope out my tour meeting location and take the tram up to the top of the mountain since I got a free ticket from Norwegian.
This is where my bear tour meets. There’s a discrepancy. My app says 1pm, my ticket has a 12:45 meet time, and that sign says 12:30.
My plan is to take the Skyglider up the mountain. I’m just going to try to be back by 12:30 to be safe.
The transporter line is crazy.
I’m going to walk it.
I’ve been here three times and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone in this adventure park so I don’t think it’s open.
There are a couple of areas to sit and rest.
A bald eagle nest.
The end is in sight.
The transporter line is better on this side.
Departure den is where you exchange your cruise ship tickets for a bracelet.
Zip Rider is on the left and Sky Glider is on the right.
This is good for unlimited rides. I’m pressed for time so I’m just going to go up, take some pictures, and come back down.
There was no line for the Sky Glider.
That’s the Bliss on the right. You can barely see the top of Jewel on the left.
I’m just going to take a few pictures and head back down.
They have food and drinks up here.
I did the Forest Tram last year. When I did it the cost was $79. I got it for $29 after Norwegian’s $50 discount. Now they’ve raised the price to $130. I wouldn’t recommend it at the old price and it’s definitely not worth the new price. You can read about it at Mountaintop Forest Tram.
I’m heading back down.
Fortunately we have a very short line for the transporter this time.
I figured out what the deal was. There was a 12:30 that just left. My excursion wasn’t on the board yet. It would be nice if they listed both excursion times to avoid confusion.
It looks like the Sun is going to be sliding in sometime before 4. If I didn’t have a tour to do I’d try to be on the top of the mountain for that.
And we’re off.
For full coverage of the tour, please visit Spasski River Wildlife and Bear Search. I’m going to skip ahead to after the tour.
On the walk back from the tour bus I spotted a couple black tail deer.
That’s a baby eagle in the tree. Possibly from the nest we saw earlier.
Seaborne Odyssey
Norwegian Sun has replaced the Bliss in port.
The whale watching boats are done for the day.
The port area is clearing up. We’ll be leaving soon.
Seabourn is tendering.
I’m grabbing some beers to take to dinner. I found a bartender who knows my name. I didn’t get any of those on Jewel last year.
I didn’t get a window seat this time but a lot of people are eating now.
French onion soup
Waldorf salad
Chicken Madeira
Bananas Foster
I stepped outside after dinner and we are sailing away.
The main lounge is pretty full for Bud Andersen’s PG comedy. He’s pretty good.
After comedy I stepped outside to catch the sunset.
I think this group was on this ship last year. They’re good. They’re doing an Elvis tribute now.
I’m in the Spinnaker Lounge for the Not So Newly Wed show. This is similar to Carnival’s Love and Marriage show. They are doing things opposite of Carnival. Carnival would have the comedy in here and this in the Main Lounge.
I grabbed a dirty marini at the bar. This is the best dirty martini I’ve had on this ship.
I stepped outside for a minute to catch some more of the sunset.
The lounge is pretty packed I took a seat in the back where I could still see the sunset.
I went back to the main lounge for Bud Andersen’s second PG show. He said his second show wouldn’t be a repeat and it wasn’t.
I got a notice that they changed my salmon bake excursion by two hours. That pushes it into one of my other excursions. I went down to guest services and had them cancel it.
Mission Impossible 7 is on in the atrium.
Wonka, Elemental, and One Love are on the room TV movie channels.
I’m off to bed. Tomorrow we’re in Juneau. Good Night!
