Freeport: Glass Bottom Boat & Shark Experience

on
July 8, 2024

I booked this tour through Carnival for $79.99. I am always interested when I get a chance to see wildlife in their natural habitat. This is supposed to get us in a glass bottom boat in a location where sharks like to hang out because they’re frequently hand fed by divers in this area.

The ticket says to meet at the white tent on the pier. By that I’m assuming they mean the metal frame where a white tent may have once been.

This is me.

I hate these buses. If you’re one of the last on you have to sit in jump seats in the aisle. I sat one one in Grand Cayman and it wasn’t fun.

They took our ticket and gave us this one.

I avoided the jump seat for now.

That’s not comfortable.

We had to sign a waiver at the activities desk.

Then there was an opportunity to use the restroom outside. These bathrooms are probably the cleanest I’ve seen in a port. All white tile and marble. It smells like Ajax in there.

This is our boat.

I got to see this porcupine fish before I even got on the boat. That’s a good sign.

the last time I did a glass bottom was in Roatan. In that boat you went below, sat on a bench, and had side windows. You were actually under water. That’s what I was expecting here. I was a little disappointed when I saw that we look down into glass tiles in the bottom of the boat.

Robbie is our tour guide.

First we went over rainbow reef.

You can see we’re pretty far out and the water is very shallow.

Now we’re starting to get to deeper water. It’s 20-25 feet here. We’re heading out to 45 foot deep water.

These are yellowtail snappers.

At this point you can just look out in the water and see the sharks.

Someone dropped their glasses and Robbie retrieved them.

We got to see a lot of sharks before heading back. It does get old quick when all you get to see is the top of the sharks looking down through those glass panels.

At this point we went out front and the bus wasn’t there. Robbie came out and said the driver would be there in 30 minutes 11:30 ship time.

He said we could check out the store, straw market, or restaurant and he would let us know when the bus was there.  I found this bar out back and ordered a local beer.

At 11:25 I headed back out front but nobody was there. Then I noticed the bus was pulling away! I had to chase after it. But it stopped and I was able to get on. Of course being last I got stuck in a jump seat.

I was hoping for a better experience than what we got on this tour. There aren’t a lot of interesting things to do in Freeport.

I wish we had a glass bottom boat where you’re in the bottom and have a side view like I had in Roatan. But this was an actual glass bottom boat with glass panels. Views were limited to just the top of the sharks. I would like a bigger bus that doesn’t have to use jump seats.

I thought the tour was unorganized. The guide said the bus would be there in 30 minutes and that he would notify us when it arrived. When I didn’t hear anything I was back out there in 25 minutes and found the bus was leaving without me. Clearly there was no head count. I reported this to the excursion desk and was issued a partial refund of $20 onboard credit.
