Edge at Hudson Yards
I just finished the Empire State Building observatory. I grabbed an overpriced water from a vendor outside. Now I’m heading to The Edge at Hudson Yards. My CityMapper App said it’s a 20 minute subway commute or a 20 minute walk. I looked at that and probably made a poor decision by deciding to walk it.
There’s a lot of construction going on around here which impacts where you can walk. This is Madison Square Garden.
Now we’re coming up on Penn Station.
This is Vessel. It was designed to be an artsy tourist attraction. It originally opened in 2019. After being COVID closed it reopened for a few months before being shut down again after several suicides took place here.
Here is a look at Vessel from inside the shopping mall next door which houses The Edge.
Up on the second floor are kiosks where you can purchase your Edge tickets.
This is the entrance.
A sneak peek at The Edge gift shop.
This is the ticket scanner.
There’s definitely a weird vibe here. It’s like you’re going into a haunted house.
Here they have a cafe, bar, gift shop, and the observation deck.
They have stadium seating where you can sit and enjoy the view.
It’s a pretty good view up here.
Here you can see we are basically down the street from the Empire State Building. I just walked from there.
They do have a mobile bar setup out here.
They have a glass floor in the middle you can walk out on.
We are right by the Hudson River.
The upsell here is something called City Climb. It didn’t look like anyone was doing it or getting ready to do it or anything like that while I was here.
These are the helmets for City Climb.
Central Park.
Empire State Building.
This is the Hudson River.
The USS Intrepid. On the other side of that is the Manhattan Cruise Terminal where Carnival Magic sails from. Those cars belong to people who are on the ship right now.
There is a cafe and tables you can sit at and enjoy the view.
They have a bar but I don’t have time for drinks. I need to start making my way back to the hotel to get ready for Mr. Saturday Night.
This is the advertisement for the upsell they have here called City Climb. If you want to hang off the edge of a building wearing just a helmet for protection, this is where you can do that. What does the helmet protect you from exactly? I don’t see anything you can bump your head on other than the ground if you fall. In which case it isn’t going to offer much protection.
The high line is an old elevated rail line that has been changed into an elevated walkway/park. It’s a mile and a half long. I planned to walk the entire line but I don’t have time so I’m just doing a little bit of it.
That’s a high line overpass I’m going to walk under in a minute.
Walking under the High Line.
One more look at Vessel.
I wanted to be back by 5 and it’s after 5 now so I gotta gotta go.
This is the steepest escalator I’ve ever been on. I looked at the guy on the next escalator and he was almost laying down.
Line swap.
I got back to the hotel at just after 5:30. I stopped and picked up five $1 waters from The Halal Guy’s stand that’s a block away. I need to get ready for Mr. Saturday night.
