Alaskan Splendor: Juneau
Good morning from the capitol of Alaska, Juneau! Whale watching is a very popular excursion here. I did my Whale Watching in Icy Strait Point specifically so I could free today up for Mendenhall Glacier. I’m doing Mendenhall at my own pace so I will be able to have a normal morning of coffee, drinks, and breakfast before I head out.
Here is today’s schedule of events.
Both coffee lines look like kind of a long wait.
Since I was going to have to stop by the atrium bar for my screwdriver anyway, I decided to just get my coffee there as well.
The guy in the blue jumpsuit just walked right into the that mirror pole. I laughed.
I got an order of pancakes and avocado toast with a side of bacon and hash browns.
I am heading off of the ship.
That’s an early back on board so I needed to get moving pretty quick.
If you booked an excursion through Carnival this would be your meeting point.
Just beyond that are the glacier bus kiosks. I walked up to one he asks “can I help you?” I explain that I’m looking for the bus kiosk. He says “I’m in it.” I say oh that kind of kiosk!
They told me to go down by the mountain tram and meet their guy.
This is the meeting point for my glacier bus. For full coverage of my time at Mendenhall Glacier, check out Mendenhall Glacier. I am going to skip ahead to when I got back.
The shuttle bus driver made a stop at Red Dog Saloon, then another by the tram. I went for the Red Dog Saloon stop which is closer to the ship…And the saloon.
This place is packed. But look at that one lonely spot on the right.
Red Saloon Red. The beer not the waitress. She’s Christina.
This is a look at the menu. I have my eye on some crab legs down the street so I’m not going to eat here.
This is a duck fart. They had these at the Duck Point Bar at Icy Strait Point but they called them Duck Shot there. It is made with Crown, Kahula, and Bailey’s.
Forbidden Peaks IPA.
This is pretty cool. I want to say at the end of the Wyatt Earp movie with Kevin Costner he is sailing out of Alaska with his wife. This very well may be from then.
This video will give you an idea of the atmosphere. It is really cool.
Through the exit is a Red Dog Saloon gift shop.
This is a look down the main street.
The ship is right there but I’m going for crabs.
That’s what I’m looking for. The shuttle bus driver said it was good but pricy.
Look at those!
You could very easily pay around $100 for some crab here. I’m going to get the #1 but go with the Dungeness.
You order straight ahead to the left there when you walk in. Then you get your drinks at the bar to the right. You find a seat and they’ll call your name and bring your food.
I went with two Alaskan Ambers.
They have souvenirs as well.
That was really good. I’m heading back to the ship with a full stomach.
I’m going with my little trick when a lot of people are waiting for the elevators.
I take the stairs up to deck 2 where the glass elevators are. Those elevators don’t go down to deck 0.
I showered and changed in the room then hit the lido deck.
I saw something different at Massla Tiger so I’m trying it.
And we are sailing away.
First one here!
Yulyia made this.
FJ made this Coconut blackberry drink
FJ made this one. It’s a spicy chocolate mint made with habanero vodka.
This is a repeat. FJ’s adult milkshake from yesterday.
Yulyia made this one. It’s like a mocha coffee
Yulyia made this. I don’t know what it is but it’s really good.
I was talking to a couple at the bar for awhile. When they left they asked my name. I said Greg. They asked “Are you Saint Greg?”
I went by Red Frog Pub before the show. Talk about dead. I mean a lot of people don’t know it’s there and it’s a great space but they only use it for karaoke.
“88 Keys” is tonight’s Playlist show.
While I was at the alchemy there was a captain’s announcement of a norovirus outbreak on the ship. Then this was left in my cabin.
I requested a table for dinner.
The duo in the atrium is singing the Wonder Years theme song
Just in time for Showtime.
With these loungers right by the window I wonder what if someone actually wanted to layout here at this time? Could Borat come out here while I’m eating?
“Showtime”
Caesar salad.
I accidentally ate one before I took the picture but this is most of the shrimp cocktail.
This is my first time trying the alligator beignets. They aren’t really beignets. They’re more like alligator nuggets. Alligator nuggets not an alligator’s nuggets. Two were pretty good. One was inedible. Totally fat.
This dish was just as it was on Glory. The ribs were very tender. Again I liked the corn. I didn’t like the beans. The fries this time actually looked good. I stuck a fork in one and realized it wasn’t crispy at all. Undercooked. I didn’t bother trying it.
I wanted to try the Apple pie because it had the special Carnival icon on the menu. It smelled really good. But my mom makes a great apple pie so it’s tough to impress me with apple pie. I just ate the apples and left the pie. I left the pie crust I guess. I would think once the apples are gone it ceases being a pie and is now just a pie crust again.
Kyle Grooms is on stage in the Punchliner.
PJ Walsh is really good.
It’s 10:30pm and the casino entertainment is still happening.
Not so much in the atrium.
The door next to mine is cracked open all the time. It’s weird. It is an accessible room so maybe it’s a safety issue for my neighbor(s). I haven’t seen them all cruise.
Good night! Tomorrow we’re in Ketchikan.

I enjoy your reviews. As a solo traveler, almost 70 year old female, I really like your Juneau plans. Cancelled my glacier/salmon bake combo with Carnival and booked the glacier express through Juneau tours. Gives me more time for exploring both at the Glacier and in town. Have you ever tried Deckhand Dave’s? It sounds so good.
Saint Greg
Thanks! This was my first time to Juneau. I haven’t tried deckhand Dave’s but I will keep it in mind if I come back!
