Alaska Jewel: Skagway

on
January 26, 2024

Good morning! I headed downstairs to get a coffee from Starbucks as we make our way to Skagway. Skagway was replaced with Icy Strait Point on my Alaska cruise last year so this is a first time port for me.

Here is today’s schedule of events.

Since I’m pressed for time today I thought I would do breakfast at O’Sheehans where I could get my food and my drinks. I got a table. I wasn’t too happy that the place was nearly empty and they seated me shoulder to shoulder with a couple.

I tried to order their breakfast sandwich with the fried egg. I had gotten a tip ahead of time that the scrambled eggs here are powdered and if you order it fried you get a real egg. The waiter tells me twice that it comes with scrambled. Then he asks me how I want my eggs cooked. I thought fried was sufficient but maybe not.

Then I found out the bar wasn’t open for drinks until 8. I asked the bartender if there was a bar open before 8 on this ship. He chuckled and said maybe the pool bar. I canceled my order and left.

I got a nice table down in the Palace.

Looking at the schedule it looks like The Great Outdoors bar opened at 7. That’s so dumb in Alaska. The ”24 hours O’Sheehans” opens at 8 and the first bar open on an Alaskan cruise is outside. The first bar open should be the atrium bar.

I got a breakfast wrap and waffles.

In my first five minutes of sitting down here with my huge coffee three people asked me if I wanted coffee. I’m not in a great mood. Please stop asking me if I want coffee.

I generally like the dining room breakfast here better than what they have on Carnival. I think the waffles, pancakes, and french toast are all better here. The breakfast sandwich is as good if not better here.

We have arrived in Skagway.

Carnival Spirit. I’ll be on her for the first time in February

For full coverage of my train ride please check out White Pass Railroad in Skagway.

The train stopped downtown and at the ship. I got off downtown. They say there’s a smart bus you can catch for $3/ride or $5/day but the ship is so close I’ll just walk when I’m done.

That’s about how far the walk is.

I’m going to take a quick walk around inside the train station.

I just walked to the end of the street. This is downtown Skagway.

Let’s check out the Visitor’s Center.

There are a lot of free activities here in Skagway. If you are planning on spending the day in town, I would recommend getting to the Visitor’s Center first thing to check out the schedule.

Now let’s check out the gold rush museum.

Neither of those museums costed anything. You really could spend the day in Skagway looking at trains, the visitor’s center, and the gold rush museum without spending any money if you wanted.

I’ve heard the Red Onion Saloon is a place to check out. It’s on a lot of the excursions. I’m going to stop in there before I head back to the ship.

For full coverage of my time at the Red Onion, please check out Red Onion Saloon & Brothel Tour in Skagway.

After the Red Onion I decided to head back to the ship.

There is a smart bus that will take you back to the ship for $3 but I’m going to walk it.

It looks like they do have daytime movies. Maverick is on now. They’re behind Carnival on that one. Carnival ran it for about six months which ended 4-5 months ago.

I had a bloody mary and nachos for lunch.

Then some screwdrivers.

And White Russians.

Finally Coronas.

I checked on my room. It was cleaned while I was out.

I headed down to O’Sheehans for more Coronas.

I headed up to lido deck for sail away.

They have showers by the pools. I haven’t seen anything like this on Carnival.

And we are off.

After sail away I took some pictures of the buffet.

The card room seems to be popular.

This is the library.

And the spa.

The main show tonight is Velvet.

I was three minutes late getting to the show. I’ve been sitting in the front row for shows and it has not been full. I walked up today and the lower level was roped off on both sides.

I headed up to the upper level where I ran into a bunch of people looking for seats and a cruise director telling them they have balcony seats available.

The balcony actually was full.

But there are plenty of lower level seats available that you cannot get to.

I went down to the lower level and they wouldn’t let me in. The girl used her hand to block me from taking pictures of the open seats.

I guess I’m coming back for the later show.

I decide to do dinner. I looked at the MDR menus and it looked interesting. I think it always will since this is my first time with NCL. I went to Azure at 7:15 and had no wait.

Stuffed mushrooms

Tostadas

I couldn’t pick between the short rib or the shrimp so I tried both. Both were good. I would go with shrimp because they were huge and good.

I wasn’t really hungry for dessert so what I did was just order the only dessert that I wasn’t sure what it was going to be. That was crème caramel.

It’s what I would call flan which I’m not really wanting which works out since I’m not hungry.

It’s such a waste seeing tennis on all these TVs around the ship and nobody watching it.

This band catches my eye. I’m digging the horns.

I grabbed a couple coronas at the bar.

And they’re done…of course.

I have about a half hour to kill before the late showing of Velvet.

They have a solo guitarist now.

I saw that a band I like was on deck 13 so I went up there.

I headed down to make sure I got into the show early. I’m going with the Chicago seat because there’s a crazy looking clown sitting on the other side and I don’t know what’s up with him.

The clown I was trying to avoid is actually in the show.

At a few points during the show I looked back and didn’t see any aisles blocked. I went back to where it was blocked earlier and it was not blocked off.  I don’t know what the deal was earlier.

This is the water they have on the ship.

I got the late night munchies so I grabbed a rueben from O’Sheehans.

I’m off to bed. Tomorrow we’re in Ketchikan. Good night!
