Alaska Jewel: Anchorage Day 1
I just took a Lyft from the airport to my Airbnb. This is the Leopold David House. It was the house of the first mayor of Anchorage. From what I’ve read it’s a law office now, but the stairs around the back lead to my Airbnb.
This is the view from the balcony.
I am out in search of food. These totems are out in front of the courthouse.
It’s not too crowded down here right now. That’s nice. There aren’t a lot of people and there isn’t a lot of traffic.
International House of Hot Dogs.
I got an Alaska dog made with reindeer sausage.
It has onions and a spicy sauce on it.
That’s my trolley meeting place. I have an hour to kill.
This is actually a fancy looking restaurant. And it’s packed. No wonder the streets are empty. Everyone is here. And it’s 3pm.
There was one seat available at the end of the bar. That’s the only way I was able to sit down right now.
I ordered a flight and some salmon dip.
I ordered the flagship but seasonal sounds interesting as well.
The guy next to me got some jalapeño cornbread that looks good.
After eating I walked back by the log cabin. I still have a few minutes to kill. This building was Anchorage’s first City Hall.
I am getting in line for the tour. For full coverage of the trolley tour, please check out Anchorage Trolley Tours. I’m going to skip ahead to after the tour.
As I mentioned in the trolley tour our guide pointed out a place where you can see a live reindeer. I remember it being by the Veteran’s Memorial so I went out on foot to see it. Along the way this train engine caught my eye so I made a detour.
Then I headed down to the Veteran’s Memorial.
Almost across the street from the Veteran’s Memorial is where you’ll find Star The Reindeer.
Here are a couple video clips.
One place the pretty much everyone mentions is this ice cream place. It’s practically across the street from me so I stopped on the way back and grabbed a scoop.
I got a Sitka Swirl and brought it back to the Airbnb.
After changing clothes I headed over to 49th State Brewery for dinner. I started out with a flight of their beer.
They have caramel popcorn for bar snacks.
Seafood chowder.
Parmesan and asiago crusted halibut
Here is the recipe for that halibut.
Parmesan & Asiago Crusted Halibut
I had a plan for dessert but I think I ate too much.
I think I’m also starting to feel the fact that I’ve been up for 21 hours.
They have this rooftop seating area then a rooftop bar above that so I headed up to check out the view. Supposedly this is a good place to see Denali on a clear day.
That’s my Airbnb.
After that I headed back to the Airbnb and went to bed. I have a glacier walk booked for tomorrow.
